To the Chief Musician; after the manner of Jeduthun [one of David's three chief musicians, founder of an official musical family]. A Psalm of Asaph.
1I WILL cry to God with my voice, even to God with my voice, and He will give ear and hearken to me.
2In the day of my trouble I seek (inquire of and desperately require) the Lord; in the night my hand is stretched out [in prayer] without slacking up; I refuse to be comforted.
3I [earnestly] remember God; I am disquieted and I groan; I muse in prayer, and my spirit faints [overwhelmed]. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
4You hold my eyes from closing; I am so troubled that I cannot speak.
5I consider the days of old, the years of bygone times [of prosperity].
6I call to remembrance my song in the night; with my heart I meditate and my spirit searches diligently:
7Will the Lord cast off forever? And will He be favorable no more?
8Have His mercy and loving-kindness ceased forever? Have His promises ended for all time?
9Has God [deliberately] abandoned or forgotten His graciousness? Has He in anger shut up His compassion? Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
10And I say, This [apparent desertion of Israel by God] is my appointed lot and trial, but I will recall the years of the right hand of the Most High [in loving-kindness extended toward us], for this is my grief, that the right hand of the Most High changes.
11I will [earnestly] recall the deeds of the Lord; yes, I will [earnestly] remember the wonders [You performed for our fathers] of old.
12I will meditate also upon all Your works and consider all Your [mighty] deeds.
13Your way, O God, is in the sanctuary [in holiness, away from sin and guilt]. Who is a great God like our God?
14You are the God Who does wonders; You have demonstrated Your power among the peoples.
15You have with Your [mighty] arm redeemed Your people, the sons of Jacob and Joseph. Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]!
16When the waters [at the Red Sea and the Jordan] saw You, O God, they were afraid; the deep shuddered also, for [all] the waters saw You.
17The clouds poured down water, the skies sent out a sound [of rumbling thunder]; Your arrows went forth [in forked lightning].
18The voice of Your thunder was in the whirlwind, the lightnings illumined the world; the earth trembled and shook.
19Your way [in delivering Your people] was through the sea, and Your paths through the great waters, yet Your footsteps were not traceable, but were obliterated.
20You led Your people like a flock by the hand of Moses and Aaron.
12And the Lord appeared to Solomon by night and said to him: I have heard your prayer and have chosen this place for Myself as a house of sacrifice.
13If I shut up heaven so no rain falls, or if I command locusts to devour the land, or if I send pestilence among My people,
14If My people, who are called by My name, shall humble themselves, pray, seek, crave, and require of necessity My face and turn from their wicked ways, then will I hear from heaven, forgive their sin, and heal their land.
15Now My eyes will be open and My ears attentive to prayer offered in this place.
16For I have chosen and sanctified (set apart for holy use) this house, that My Name may be here forever, and My eyes and My heart will be here perpetually. — Amplified Bible
1BE THAT as it may, Job, I beg of you to hear what I have to say and give heed to all my words.
2Behold, here I am with open mouth; here is my tongue talking.
3My words shall express the uprightness of my heart, and my lips shall speak what they know with utter sincerity.
4[It is] the Spirit of God that made me [which has stirred me up], and the breath of the Almighty that gives me life [which inspires me].
5Answer me now, if you can; set your words in order before me; take your stand.
6Behold, I am toward God and before Him even as you are; I also am formed out of the clay [though I speak with abnormal wisdom because of a divine illumination].
7See my terror [for I am only a fellow mortal, not God]; I shall not make you afraid, neither shall my pressure be heavy upon you.
8Surely you have spoken in my hearing, and I have heard the voice of your words, saying,
9I am clean, without transgression; I am innocent, neither is there iniquity in me.
10But behold, God finds occasions against me and causes of alienation and indifference; He counts me as His enemy.
11He puts my feet in the stocks; He [untrustingly] watches all my paths [you say].
12I reply to you, Behold, in this you are not just; God is superior to man.
13Why do you contend against Him? For He does not give account of any of His actions. [Sufficient for us it should be to know that it is He Who does them.]
14For God [does reveal His will; He] speaks not only once, but more than once, even though men do not regard it [including you, Job].
15[One may hear God's voice] in a dream, in a vision of the night, when deep sleep falls on men while slumbering upon the bed,
16Then He opens the ears of men and seals their instruction [terrifying them with warnings],
17That He may withdraw man from his purpose and cut off pride from him [disgusting him with his own disappointing self-sufficiency].
18He holds him back from the pit [of destruction], and his life from perishing by the sword [of God's destructive judgments].
19[God's voice may be heard by man when] he is chastened with pain upon his bed and with continual strife in his bones or while all his bones are firmly set,
20So that his desire makes him loathe food, and even dainty dishes [nauseate him].
21His flesh is so wasted away that it cannot be seen, and his bones that were not seen stick out.
22Yes, his soul draws near to corruption, and his life to the inflicters of death (the destroyers).
23[God's voice may be heard] if there is for the hearer a messenger or an angel, an interpreter, one among a thousand, to show to man what is right for him [how to be upright and in right standing with God],
24Then [God] is gracious to him and says, Deliver him from going down into the pit [of destruction]; I have found a ransom (a price of redemption, an atonement)!
25[Then the man's] flesh shall be restored; it becomes fresher and more tender than a child’s; he returns to the days of his youth.
26He prays to God, and He is favorable to him, so that he sees His face with joy; for [God] restores to him his righteousness (his uprightness and right standing with God–with its joys).
27He looks upon other men or sings out to them, I have sinned and perverted that which was right, and it did not profit me, or He did not requite me [according to my iniquity]!
28[God] has redeemed my life from going down to the pit [of destruction], and my life shall see the light!
29[Elihu comments] Behold, God does all these things twice, yes, three times, with a man,
30To bring back his life from the pit [of destruction], that he may be enlightened with the light of the living.
31Give heed, O Job, listen to me; hold your peace, and I will speak.
32If you have anything to say, answer me; speak, for I desire to justify you.
33If [you do] not [have anything to say], listen to me; hold your peace, and I will teach you wisdom.
Texas Governor Rick Perry is looking a little like a presidential campaigner, challenging Attorney General Eric Holder to enforce the law against US citizens who plan to participate in the Gaza Flotilla. Noting that their “naval expedition” specificallty violates the language of the law, he puts Holder on the spot.
Holder is sworn to uphold the law, and if he fails to take action, or at least provide some sorry rationale, he gives Perry an issue with broad appeal among conservatives, should he enter the race.
Across the landscape that is the United States in 2011, there exists among the citizenry an increasing unease and apprehension about the future of the country. Unlike many in the gilded halls of Washington D.C., the state capitals or the faculty lounges of the universities, the reality of the nation’s economic and financial status is intruding on the American people. They instinctively know that all is not well and that those upon whom they relied to steer the ship of state have failed them.
The genesis of America’s financial and economic dilemma can be confusing and easily obfuscated by those whose primary ambition is to “basically transform” the country into a failed collectivist paradise. The current occupant of the White House and an overwhelming number in the Congress and media continue to claim that by even further increases in spending, taxes and debt the country will eventually recover despite historical and current evidence to the contrary.
Therefore, it is imperative that the people understand the overwhelming tsunami of government spending, deficits, taxes and debt about to inundate to the economy resulting in potential default and bankruptcy for the United States. Only then will the citizenry recognize that common sense market based solutions are the only way out of the current crisis and the means to create another long-term economic boom.
To that end, Peter Ferrara, a former policy advisor to Ronald Reagan and Deputy Attorney General under George H.W. Bush, has written and published a concise, thorough and well-thought out book entitled: America’s Ticking Bankruptcy Bomb.
This is a work designed not for the academics or policy-makers but for the average citizen concerned for the future of the country. As such it is easy to read and comprehend particularly the evolution of how we got to where we are as a nation.
But more importantly Mr. Ferrara shows how to defuse this ticking bankruptcy bomb by laying out in specific detail a plan to create another economic boom akin to the one unleashed during the Reagan years. He shows how to fundamentally reform entitlements using market incentives; cut federal spending in half (as percent of GDP); balance the budget permanently; revamp the overbearing tax code and dramatically diminish the regulatory behemoth that is Washington D.C.
The key to avoiding national bankruptcy is to spur a surge in economic growth in order to expand the revenue base as well as the standard of living for all Americans. Mr. Ferrara’s strategy is a must read for those running for President or any political office and for all citizens concerned not only about the contemporary state of the nation but the country future generations will inherit.
Ahmad Rashid is widely considered to be the best journalist on Afghan and related Pakistani issues. And he has a scoop over the secret U.S. negotiations with the Taliban. I respect him though I don’t necessarily agree with him. And Rashid’s points must be integrated into the U.S. and Western debate over Afghanistan.
Here’s the key section:
“The talks are premised on the essential realisation that neither a successful western withdrawal from Afghanistan nor a transition to Afghan forces can take place, without an end to the civil war and a political settlement that involves the Afghan government and the Taliban, but also Pakistan, the US and the region.”
Here’s the headline: “U.S. to resume formal Muslim Brotherhood contacts.” But that’s not true. In fact, as the Reuters article itself admits there have never been “formal” contacts before but only informal ones. Let’s examine the language, which stems from a “senior U.S. official” to see what the Obama Administration thinks about the Muslim Brotherhood.
More than 1000 people were injured during rioting in Cairo, focused around Tahrir Square. It is the end of the “Arab Spring” honeymoon for Egypt. The violence began when demonstrators demanding faster trials for Mubarak era officials (clashed with? were attacked by?) police. Politicians, the April 6 Youth Movement, and the Muslim Brotherhood criticized the interim military government, comparing it with the Mubarak regime. The military accused pro-Mubarak forces of stirring up violence and confirmed that parliamentary elections will be held in September. I think the armed forces are eager to get out of politics and get back to what they do best…making money. Ironically, most of the politicians simultaneously demand that elections be speeded up (to have an elected government faster) and slow down (to keep the Muslim Brotherhood out of power.

There are two main strategic perspectives in Israel today. They aren’t contradictory but they have different priorities. These can be called the “northern” and the “southern” views.
The “northern” approach is the more traditional one, focusing on the situation in that direction. The key longer-term concern is over Iran and its drive for nuclear weapons. More closely, there are both concerns and hopes regarding Lebanon and Syria.
Regarding Iran, the new feature is the assumption that Israel will not attack Iran to prevent it from getting nuclear weapons. This means that Israel will be constructing a multi-level defensive system that includes long-range attack planes, a capability of subverting Iran’s nuclear force through covert operations, possibly submarine platforms, and several types of anti-missile missiles and defenses.
The goal here is four-fold:
–To delay as long as possible Iran getting nuclear weapons and to minimize the size and effectiveness of its arsenal through sanctions, international pressure, sabotage, and other means.
–To have the maximum ability to deter Iran from launching a nuclear attack on Israel and showing the ability to stop Iranian missiles. The aim is to discourage Iran from launching such an attack given a near-certainty that it can be stopped and Iran will suffer very heavy damage as a result.
–Of course, ordinary deterrence is not a sufficient safeguard against Iran given the Islamic regime’s ideological extremism and passionate hatred of Israel, the recklessness of some key elements there, and the rulers’ shortcomings in accurately assessing reality. Consequently, Israel must put a high priority on stopping any Iranian attack from happening at all or succeeding if it does happen.
–To be able, if Israel ever determines there is a real danger of an Iranian attack, to launch a first strike to inflict maximum damage on Iran’s nuclear strike force. In other words, an Israeli attack would be premised not on Iran getting nuclear weapons but on Iran being likely to use nuclear weapons.
U.S. deterrence, early-warning, and anti-missile efforts would supplement this system but this strategy is not premised on any dependence on the U.S. government.
But Israel also knows that an equal or even greater danger is the spread of Iranian influence, taking over Arab countries or turning them into clients that can be used against Israel. Here, the northern focus is on Syria and Lebanon.
On the surface, the news from these two countries is potentially bad. Lebanon is now ruled by a government controlled by Hizballah and other Syrian or Syrian-Iranian clients. Hizballah thus can use Lebanon as a virtual fiefdom for building its military power and attacking Israel. This is much worse than the 2006 Hizballah-Israel war when Lebanon as a government and army had a separate identity.
Syria itself is faced with a serious internal upheaval that seems increasingly likely to bring down the dictatorship of President Hafiz al-Asad. Here the “glass half-empty” analysis is that Asad might be replaced by an Islamist or radical regime even more hostile to Israel.
There is also, though, a “glass half full” analysis. As long as Syria is in such turmoil, it cannot so effectively threaten Israel. And if Asad is overthrown a government might take power that is more preoccupied by internal affairs, perhaps less eager to be in conflict with Israel.
Iraq offers a good model here. Between the interests of the Kurds, the internal conflict, a greater focus on domestic development, and other factors, Iraq has dropped out of the conflict with Israel.
Hizballah also suffers from this turmoil. Since it has sided with the Asad regime, Hizballah has gone from wildly popular to widely hated by the Syrian people. Hamas, which has sided against the Syrian regime and in favor of its Muslim Brotherhood comrades, has lost Syrian patronage. Finally, Syria’s aggressive behavior has opened up a rift between that country and Turkey’s government, which has been increasingly acting like an ally of the Iranian and Syrian regimes.
Consequently, while this is no ideal or wonderful situation, Israel can be considered to have benefitted from this aspect of the “Arab Spring.”
From Israel’s standpoint, the relative stability in Jordan and Saudi Arabia is a plus since these countries are unlikely to be transformed into radical Islamist states under a government linked to al-Qaida, Iran, or the Muslim Brotherhood. The turmoil in Bahrain, Yemen, and Tunisia is of relatively little strategic significance to Israel.
Generally, there can be a hope that democracy and domestic development will become a higher priority than fighting Israel, thus easing the pressure on Israel, or at least preoccupying Arabs and Muslims for a while. Clearly, merely calling dissidents Zionist agents and trying to unite the people around an anti-Israel political platform no longer works for incumbent nationalist governments.
In time, this strategy might work for replacement, Islamist governments but that hasn’t happened yet. Moreover, American weakness and the Obama Administration’s cooler view toward Israel is worrisome. So is the possibility that things might be moving in a way to strengthen Iran.
If one looks at the southern front, though, it is harder to find some possible silver lining. Egypt is likely to elect a radical government more hostile than anything Israel has faced there since about 1974. The future of the Egypt-Israel peace treaty is gloomy. Peace between Israel and the Arab world’s most populous country cannot be taken for granted.
There is also the problem of the Egypt-Hamas relationship. Egypt is likely to see itself as Hamas’s ally and patron. In a future Israel-Hamas conflict begun by an attack on Israel from the Gaza Strip any time Hamas so wishes, Egypt could actively take the side of the Palestinian Islamists and will certainly help them. The long-quiet southern front now has to be treated as a very possible zone of armed conflict.
This is the basic way things look for Israeli strategists. One can stress better- or worse-case scenarios and different parts of the challenge but there is a general consensus on the fundamental challenges—and on the fact that they will be met successfully.

1IN THE eighth month, in the second year [of the reign] of Darius, came the word of the Lord to Zechariah son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, the prophet, saying,
2The Lord was very angry with your fathers.
3Therefore say to them [the Jews of this day], Thus says the Lord of hosts: Return to Me, says the Lord of hosts, and I will return to you; it is the utterance of the Lord of hosts.
4Be not as your fathers to whom the former prophets cried, Thus says the Lord of hosts: Return now from your evil ways and your evil doings; but they would not hear or listen to Me, says the Lord.
5Your fathers, where are they? And the prophets, do they live forever?
6But My words and My statutes, which I commanded My servants the prophets, did they not overtake and take hold of your fathers? So they repented and said, As the Lord of hosts planned and purposed to do to us, according to our ways and according to our doings, so has He dealt with us.
7Upon the twenty-fourth day of the eleventh month, which is the month of Shebat, in the second year of the reign of Darius, the word of the Lord came to Zechariah son of Berechiah, the son of Iddo, the prophet. Zechariah said,
8I saw in the night [vision] and behold, a [a]Man riding upon a red horse, and He stood among the myrtle trees that were in a low valley or bottom, and behind Him there were horses, red, bay or flame-colored, and white.
9Then said I, O my lord, what are these? And the [b]angel who talked with me said, I will show you what these are.
10And the Man who stood among the myrtle trees answered and said, These are they whom the Lord has sent to walk to and fro through the earth and patrol it.
11And the men on the horses answered [c]the Angel of the Lord Who stood among the myrtle trees and said, We have walked to and fro through the earth [patrolling it] and behold, all the earth sits at rest [in peaceful security].
12Then the Angel of the Lord said, O Lord of hosts, how long will You not have mercy and lovingkindness for Jerusalem and the cities of Judah, against which You have had indignation these seventy years [of the Babylonian captivity]?
13And the Lord answered the angel who talked with me with gracious and comforting words.
14So the angel who talked with me said to me, Cry out, Thus says the Lord of hosts: I am jealous for Jerusalem and for Zion with a great jealousy.
15And I am very angry with the nations that are at ease; for while I was but a little displeased, they helped forward the affliction and disaster.
16Therefore thus says the Lord: I have returned to Jerusalem with compassion (lovingkindness and mercy). My house shall be built in it, says the Lord of hosts, and a measuring line shall be stretched out over Jerusalem [with a view to rebuilding its walls].
17Cry yet again, saying, Thus says the Lord of hosts: My cities shall yet again overflow with prosperity, and the Lord shall yet comfort Zion and shall yet choose Jerusalem.
18Then I lifted up my eyes and saw, and behold, four horns [symbols of strength].
19And I said to the angel who talked with me, What are these? And he answered me, These are the horns or powers which have scattered Judah, Israel, and Jerusalem.
20Then the Lord showed me four smiths or workmen [one for each enemy horn, to beat it down].
21Then said I, What are these [horns and smiths] coming to do? And he said, These are the horns or powers that scattered Judah so that no man lifted up his head. But these smiths or workmen have come to terrorize them and cause them to be panic-stricken, to cast out the horns or powers of the nations who lifted up their horn against the land of Judah to scatter it.
Zechariah 1:9 The interpreting angel, mentioned in Zech. 1:9, 13-14; 2:3; 4:1, 4-5; 5:5, 10; 6:4-5, not to be confused with the Man of Zech. 1:8 or the Angel of the Lord of Zech. 1:11.
Zechariah 1:11 That the Angel of the Lord is an uncreated angel distinguished from other angels, and in many places identified with the Lord God, is undeniable. On the other hand there are passages in which He seems to be distinguished from God the Father. The simplest way of reconciling these two classes is to adopt the old view that this Angel is Christ, the second person of the Godhead, even at that early period appearing as the Revealer of the Father (Johan P. Lange, A Commentary). See also footnote on Gen. 16:7.
During the presidential campaign of 1960, Senator John F. Kennedy had several issues to confront, not the least of which was his religion. Although there were numerous elected officials across the country who were members of the Catholic faith, no Catholic had ever risen to the level of Chief Executive. JFK decided to face it head-on. In his famous address to the Greater Houston Ministerial Association on September 12, 1960, he made it clear that his religion would not impact his decision-making as president. “I am not the Catholic candidate for President,” he said. “I am the Democratic Party candidate for President who also happens to be a Catholic. I do not speak for my Church on public matters, and the Church does not speak for me.”
Kennedy questioned rhetorically whether one-quarter of Americans were relegated to second-class citizenship just because they were Catholic. The future president, who had served with distinction in the U.S. Navy, added, “No one asked me my religion in the South Pacific.”
A recent Gallup Poll indicated 22% of Americans would not be willing to for vote for a Mormon for president. The poll also showed that 7% would refuse to vote for a Catholic and 9% would not vote for a Jew. Just about half, 49%, said they wouldn’t vote for an atheist. We can only imagine what the numbers would be if they were asked about a Muslim for president.
Just to provide some historical perspective, in 1959, the year before JFK won election as the nation’s first Catholic president, 25% of Americans polled, including 22% of Democrats, 33% of Republicans, and 18% of independents, said they would not vote for a Catholic. Okay, so JFK had a 25% disadvantage, while Mitt Romney, who is currently in the lead for the GOP nomination next year, has merely 22% to overcome. The fact that this is even a problem for one of our leaders at the top of the political food chain, especially when we’re facing so many serious challenges to our future, is very troubling. Have we not learned anything about discrimination and bigotry since 1960?
Romney is not my first choice to lead us in a victory over President Obama in 2012, but his choice of religion has absolutely nothing to do with my preference. He has a record of reversing himself on issues whenever it appears to suit his political aspirations, and the healthcare bill he signed into law when he was Governor of Massachusetts is uncomfortably similar to ObamaCare.
However, I do believe he has shown enormous business acumen in his very successful career as an entrepreneur. He took a leave of absence about ten years ago, when he took over as President and CEO of the Salt Lake Organizing Committee of the 2002 Winter Olympics. At the time, that Utah city’s Olympics were scandal-ridden and in complete disarray until Romney took over and brought some excellent management skills to the effort. Making the rescue job seem simple, he came in with a positive attitude and hired competent, committed people, and the result was a successful Olympics that few had thought possible. To paraphrase JFK: no one asked Romney about his religion when he was saving the reputation of a world-renowned sporting competition.
If unemployment is over 8% next year and the economy is still struggling along with gas prices near $4 a gallon, along with other disastrous omens in the financial markets, it’s my guess that any Republican candidate will beat Obama. Furthermore, if that candidate is someone with a clear vision for reviving the economy, backed up by a sterling reputation for achieving success with superior management and organizing and entrepreneurial skills, I have a feeling that the voters will overlook what church the candidate attends.
If you’ve lost your steady job in the last year and you’ve been picking up an unemployment check every month and don’t see a steady job on the horizon, you want someone who you believe is capable of getting your life back on track. The average 9-to-5 working man or woman didn’t cause this recession; it was caused by elected officials who spent more time dabbling in ideology than in pragmatic governing. On his way to the GOP nomination, I don’t doubt that Romney’s opponents will try to use his Mormonism against him, albeit with subtle references, but I think primary voters next year will be more interested in getting jobs and feeding their families than in the ecclesiastical affiliation of the leader who can make that happen.
Psalm 27:9
Hide not Thy face far from me: put not Thy servant away in anger; Thou has been my help; leave me not neither forsake me, O God of my salvation.
We are opposing God’s method of working, if our life has a tendency to incapacitate us for the enjoyment of prayer at all times.
If needless excess of worldly cares; if by inordinate desires, which render it impossible for us to accomplish our objects in life without such excess of care; if by frivolous habits; if by the reading of infidel or effeminate literature; if by an indolent life; if by any self-indulgence in physical regimen – we render the habit of fragmentary prayer impracticable or unnatural to us, we are crossing the methods of God’s working. – Austin Phelps.
God’s face is hid from us not because of something He puts before it, as by something in our own life which comes in between us and Him.
The soul should be as directly in touch with God at all times as every telephone is with the central office, so that at any time communication may be made.
