The news may be full of misery, yet occasional shafts of light blast through the darkness. A teenager returns a lost purse to its owner. A 16-year-old girl is saved from freezing to death after an accident on a Kansas highway. An Israeli father and son save the lives of two drowning Iranians. Kindness, the sort of kindness that Jesus called on us to show each other, can often show up in unexpected places as jewels of mercy in the midst of life’s difficulties.
A Lost Purse: Patricia Thorpe (79) lost her red leather purse at Macquarie St. Mall in Moorebank NSW, Australia last week, along with $400 and credit cards. “I came back to the mall to look for it but couldn’t find it. I thought I could kiss it goodbye. I felt like crying,” she said.
A message on her answering machine returned hope. A young man had handed in her purse at the local Shop Smart. Mrs. Thorpe checked through it and found nothing missing. Filled with gratitude, she sent a notice through the local paper, and finally 16-year-old Michael Touzell stepped forward as the restorer of lost purses. Mrs. Thorpe was able to meet with Michael and give him a thank you note and small reward. “He’s a wonderful young man … He has restored my faith in others,” Mrs Thorpe said.
Caring Enough To Stop:
The American Red Cross gave elementary school principal Nathan Lightle its Certificate of Merit on Monday along with the opportunity to hug the young lady whose life he’d saved last December.
Sixteen-year-old Serena Stacy had swerved out of control and rolled her car three days before Christmas in 2010. She had been flung from the vehicle and was lying unconscious beside the icy Kansas highway in -18 degree weather. Lightle, his car filled with his sons and his wife, noticed Stacy’s black car in the ditch and stopped to check it out. There he found the teenager’s unmoving body. The Lightle’s called 911 and waited with the injured girl, trying to keep her warm until help arrived. Stacy had broken her pelvis in three spots, broken ribs and a vertebrae, crushed in her cheekbone and had a brain bleed.
It would have been easy to just drive by the frosty vehicle, but in spite of their own busy lives and plans, the Lightles stopped. Stacy does not remember much from that day, but she does remember talking to the Lightle family. “Seeing them today was very emotional,” she said. “If it wasn’t for them, I probably would have frozen to death.”
Reaping What You Sow:
Victor Giesbrect (61) recently made one of the best moves in his life when he pulled over in Wisconsin to help a woman stranded on the side of the road. Sara Berg had blown a tire, and Geisbrect’s assistance proved valuable in getting it changed. Once the good deed was done, Geisbrect and his wife resumed their trip. That is, until Giesbrect went into cardiac arrest.
Just a few miles down the road, Giesbrect knew something was going seriously wrong with him. He and his wife struggled together to press the brake and bring the car to the side of the road – just a short time before Sara Berg drove along. Now it was Berg’s turn to take her try at being the hero. Geisbrect’s wife called 911, and Berg proceeded to give Giesbrect CPR until a defibrillator-bearing Deputy arrived.
“If all these people wouldn’t have helped, I don’t know what would have happened. I am sure he wouldn’t be around,” said Ann Giesbrect, Victor’s wife.
Israelis and Iranians:
Last week an Israeli father Shimshon (60) and son Nimrod Machani (27) went out rowing off the coast of Koh Samui, Thailand. As they were headed home the weather changed suddenly, with large waves and strong winds. As they rowed toward home, they saw two exhausted swimmers calling for help; their kayak had flipped over and washed out to sea, and they were near drowning.
“When we reached them they were already at the point of exhaustion,” Nimrod noted. “We loaded them on to the surf boat and kept rowing towards the shore, a kilometer away.” Shimshon noticed that when the men spoke to each other, they spoke in Persian. Shimshon had been born in Iran and was able to speak to the men in their mother tongue during the long ride to the shore. ‘Don’t be scared, you’re in good hands,” Shimshon told them.
Once on land, the Iranians hugged and kissed their rescuers. As soon as they found out the men in the boat were Israelis, however, the Iranians ran off. For a moment, however, in spite of all the tension and animosity between their two home countries, the four wet men were just that – men, together, glad that two lives had been saved.
It’s easy to focus on the struggles that we all face. In the middle of the difficulties and dangers, however, God still offers His mercy. In so many ways, he sends us the rescues we need just in time, and He does it so often through people willing to love their neighbors as themselves.
As the Italian government struggled to borrow and Spain considered seeking an international bail-out, British ministers privately warned that the break-up of the euro, once almost unthinkable, is now increasingly plausible.
Diplomats are preparing to help Britons abroad through a banking collapse and even riots arising from the debt crisis.
The Treasury confirmed earlier this month that contingency planning for a collapse is now under way.
A senior minister has now revealed the extent of the Government’s concern, saying that Britain is now planning on the basis that a euro collapse is now just a matter of time.
“It’s in our interests that they keep playing for time because that gives us more time to prepare,” the minister told the Daily Telegraph.
Recent Foreign and Commonwealth Office instructions to embassies and consulates request contingency planning for extreme scenarios including rioting and social unrest.
Greece has seen several outbreaks of civil disorder as its government struggles with its huge debts. British officials think similar scenes cannot be ruled out in other nations if the euro collapses.
Diplomats have also been told to prepare to help tens of thousands of British citizens in eurozone countries with the consequences of a financial collapse that would leave them unable to access bank accounts or even withdraw cash.
Fuelling the fears of financial markets for the euro, reports in Madrid yesterday suggested that the new Popular Party government could seek a bail-out from either the European Union rescue fund or the International Monetary Fund.
There are also growing fears for Italy, whose new government was forced to pay record interest rates on new bonds issued yesterday.
The yield on new six-month loans was 6.5 per cent, nearly double last month’s rate. And the yield on outstanding two-year loans was 7.8 per cent, well above the level considered unsustainable.
Italy’s new government will have to sell more than EURO 30 billion of new bonds by the end of January to refinance its debts. Analysts say there is no guarantee that investors will buy all of those bonds, which could force Italy to default.
The Italian government yesterday said that in talks with German Chancellor Angela Merkel and French President Nicolas Sarkozy, Prime Minister Mario Monti had agreed that an Italian collapse “would inevitably be the end of the euro.”
The EU treaties that created the euro and set its membership rules contain no provision for members to leave, meaning any break-up would be disorderly and potentially chaotic.
If eurozone governments defaulted on their debts, the European banks that hold many of their bonds would risk collapse.
Some analysts say the shock waves of such an event would risk the collapse of the entire financial system, leaving banks unable to return money to retail depositors and destroying companies dependent on bank credit.
The Financial Services Authority this week issued a public warning to British banks to bolster their contingency plans for the break-up of the single currency.
Some economists believe that at worst, the outright collapse of the euro could reduce GDP in its member-states by up to half and trigger mass unemployment.
Analysts at UBS, an investment bank earlier this year warned that the most extreme consequences of a break-up include risks to basic property rights and the threat of civil disorder.
“When the unemployment consequences are factored in, it is virtually impossible to consider a break-up scenario without some serious social consequences,” UBS said.
“And Amaziah said to the man of God, But what shall we do for the hundred talents which I have given to the army of Israel? And the man of God answered, The Lord is able to give thee much more than this.”
2 Chronicles 25:9
A very important question this seemed to be to the king of Judah, and possibly it is of even more weight with the tried and tempted O Christian. To lose money is at no times pleasant, and when principle involves it, the flesh is not always ready to make the sacrifice. “Why lose that which may be so usefully employed? May not the truth itself be bought too dear? What shall we do without it? Remember the children, and our small income!” All these things and a thousand more would tempt the Christian to put forth his hand to unrighteous gain, or stay himself from carrying out his conscientious convictions, when they involve serious loss. All men cannot view these matters in the light of faith; and even with the followers of Jesus, the doctrine of “we must live” has quite sufficient weight.
The Lord is able to give thee much more than this is a very satisfactory answer to the anxious question. Our Father holds the purse-strings, and what we lose for his sake he can repay a thousand-fold. It is ours to obey his will, and we may rest assured that he will provide for us. The Lord will be no man’s debtor at the last. Saints know that a grain of heart’s-ease is of more value than a ton of gold. He who wraps a threadbare coat about a good conscience has gained a spiritual wealth far more desirable than any he has lost. God’s smile and a dungeon are enough for a true heart; his frown and a palace would be hell to a gracious spirit. Let the worst come to the worst, let all the talents go, we have not lost our treasure, for that is above, where Christ sitteth at the right hand of God. Meanwhile, even now, the Lord maketh the meek to inherit the earth, and no good thing doth he withhold from them that walk uprightly.

“Michael and his angels fought against the dragon; and the dragon fought and his angels.”
Revelation 12:7
War always will rage between the two great sovereignties until one or other be crushed. Peace between good and evil is an impossibility; the very pretence of it would, in fact, be the triumph of the powers of darkness. Michael will always fight; his holy soul is vexed with sin, and will not endure it. Jesus will always be the dragon’s foe, and that not in a quiet sense, but actively, vigorously, with full determination to exterminate evil. All his servants, whether angels in heaven or messengers on earth, will and must fight; they are born to be warriors–at the cross they enter into covenant never to make truce with evil; they are a warlike company, firm in defence and fierce in attack. The duty of every soldier in the army of the Lord is daily, with all his heart, and soul, and strength, to fight against the dragon.
The dragon and his angels will not decline the affray; they are incessant in their onslaughts, sparing no weapon, fair or foul. We are foolish to expect to serve God without opposition: the more zealous we are, the more sure are we to be assailed by the myrmidons of hell. The church may become slothful, but not so her great antagonist; his restless spirit never suffers the war to pause; he hates the woman’s seed, and would fain devour the church if he could. The servants of Satan partake much of the old dragon’s energy, and are usually an active race. War rages all around, and to dream of peace is dangerous and futile.
Glory be to God, we know the end of the war. The great dragon shall be cast out and forever destroyed, while Jesus and they who are with him shall receive the crown. Let us sharpen our swords tonight, and pray the Holy Spirit to nerve our arms for the conflict. Never battle so important, never crown so glorious. Every man to his post, ye warriors of the cross, and may the Lord tread Satan under your feet shortly!
Seraiah [Sĕra ī'ah]—jehovah is prince, the lord is my prince, or soldier of the lord.
One of king David’s scribes (2 Sam. 8:17; see 1 Chron. 18:16 for Shavsha).
The son of Azariah and chief priest at Jerusalem when Nebuchadnezzar took it. This Seraiah, along with other renowned captives, was put to death at Riblah ( 2 Kings 25:18; 1 Chron. 6:14; Ezra 7:1; Jer. 52:24).
A son of Tanhumeth, from Netophah, whom Gedaliah advised to submit to the Chaldeans. He was one of “the captains of the forces” (2 Kings 25:23; Jer. 40:8).
The second son of Kenez, brother of Othniel and father of Joab (1 Chron. 4:13, 14).
A prince of Simeon, son of Asiel and grandfather of Jehu, who drove furiously (1 Chron. 4:35).
One of the twelve leaders, a priest who returned from exile with Zerubbabel (Ezra 2:2; Neh. 10:2; 12:1, 12).
A priest, son of Hilkiah, dwelling in Jerusalem after the exile and called “ruler of the house of God” (Neh. 11:11; 12:1).
A chief man, son of Aziel, and sent by Jehoiakim to apprehend Jeremiah and Baruch (Jer. 36:26).
A son of Neriah and brother of Baruch, a prince of Judah who went to Babylon with Zedekiah (Jer. 51:59, 61). For “quiet prince” the RV has “chief chamberlain
The documentary of the full message of Christmas is still impacting people around the world.
Scholars debate whether the Star of Bethlehem is a legend created by the early church or a miracle that marked the advent of Christ. Is it possible that the star was a real, astronomical event?
While researching the birth of Christ in preparation of teaching a church class, attorney Rick Larson became intrigued by the mystery of whether the star mention in the gospel of Matthew was an actual event. This mystery sent Larson on an intensive search for the truth. The results of his research are presented in a critically acclaimed DVD documentary, The Star of Bethlehem, from Producer Stephen McEveety of MPower Pictures (The Passion of the Christ) as well as in live presentations.
The Star of Bethlehem is a breath-taking presentation, exploring the exciting truth of Scripture and revealing the evidence for God’s existence as seen in the stars above. Rick Larson walks audiences through Biblical and historical clues revealing the incredible significance of this celestial event as well as the vastness of God’s creativity.
Since his first presentation, Larson has spoken to tens of thousands of people around the country and across the globe, including several large universities in China. There are no signs of the popularity of Larson’s presentation diminishing. “It’s remarkable that sales of the DVD are increasing,” Larson recently remarked, “and not tapering off. Interest remains high globally.”
Larson also noted that there appears to be interest in taking the presentation to another level. A film team from Pretoria, South Africa recently visited Larson’s home. “They are interested in the Star, but also in the personal journey of discovery, making a film and then working to tell the story worldwide.”
Along with the DVD, live presentations and possible film documentary, The Star is prominently mentioned or featured in two books. Larson collaborated with Jenny L. Cote, author of the children’s Epic Order of the Seven series and Billy Tucci’s children’s picture book, “A Child is Born.”
With all the glitz and hoopla of the season’s commercialism, as well as the challenges faced by everyday life, many people face the Christmas holidays with a touch of cynicism. I know I was one of them. Watching The Star of Bethlehem helped restore the wonder at the beauty of this holy day and is now a perpetual part of our Christmas traditions.

A Republican proposal to deport eleven million illegal aliens as Thomas Sowell suggests would throw the entire Latino vote to Obama, virtually reassuring his reelection.
As the holiday travel season approaches, millions of American air passengers will become painfully reacquainted with the TSA and its unpopular, invasive procedures.

A chain of three stores that sells survival food and gear reports a jump in sales to people who are getting prepared for the “possible collapse” of society.
“We had to order fifty cases of the meals ready to eat to keep up with the demand in the past three months,” said manager Steve Dorsey at Uncle Sam’s Safari Outfitters Inc. in Webster Groves. “That’s not normal. Usually we sell 20 to 30 cases in a whole year.”
Dorsey says business has been brisk since the spring uprisings in the middle east, as customers share concerns about political uprisings, the world economy and the future of the United States.
“I’ve had people in here that are very wealthy and they’ve spent thousands of dollars just on backpacks that they fill with survival gear, one for each person of their family,” Dorsey said, “And something where they can just grab a bag and get out of Dodge.”
Dorsey says some customers talk of stocking up on freeze-dried meals for the home, while others confide they are stashing supplies at a remote location away from the city where they would go in an emergency.
“There are people that have property and they’ve set up different things they’re building to protect themselves like towers they can stand up and watch,” Dorsey said, “There’s a lot of people I’m dealing with who buy all kinds of stuff because they have like twenty or thirty people going in on this together and they’re all going to go to this one spot if something like this happens.”
Uncle Sam’s Safari Outfitters in Webster does not sell guns, but Dorsey also reports many customers who do not own a gun are asking where they could go to buy one.
“I think people are scared. They don’t know where this country is going. They think we’re on a downward spiral with just dramatic, crazy spending. People just don’t know what’s going to happen,” Dorsey said.
Outside Uncle Sam’s, it appears civilization is intact. A red, white and blue Pepsi truck pulls up to supply beverages for a nearby grocery store. Motorists are having their cars washed at the General Grant car wash across the street. And the brass pendulums are swinging back and forth in the clocks on the wall at Helen’s Clock Repair.
Dorsey himself admits that he does not have a personal supply of meals ready to eat stashed in his basement. “We live just two minutes from the store,” he said, “If something happens, I can drive right over here.”
Will Israel really attack Iran and attempt to destroy its nuclear facilities? The conventional wisdom is that although Jerusalem would like to, it most likely won’t – because of fear of what would happen next, and especially “the day after.”
In the wake of such an attack, many Israeli officials believe, Iran could strike back with a barrage of weapons – nuclear or conventional.
Of just as great concern is the possibility – even likelihood – of tens of thousands of conventional missiles being fired at Israel by Hizbullah and Hamas terrorists, operating out of Lebanon and Hamas.
Both terror groups, after all, are proxies for Iran, and both have substantial supplies of sophisticated missiles, some probably tipped with biological or chemical weapons.
An all-out attack on Israel, the conventional wisdom goes, would basically shut down the government and pretty much disable all defense efforts. At that point, all that would be left would be for Arab armies to march into Israel and “throw the Jews into the sea.”
Considering the constant threats lobbed at Israel by Iran, in fact, such a scenario is possible – perhaps even eventually likely – even without Israel’s attempting to destroy anything in Iran. And once Iran does get the bomb, many believe, it’s just a matter of time before Israel has to face “the day after.”
Not everyone agrees with the CW, however – and Dr. Uri Milstein, one of Israel’s most prominent military historians, believes that there are steps Israel can take right now that could ensure that Israel survives – and even emerges victorious – on “the day after.”
There are 7 million people in Israel, Milstein told Arutz Sheva in an interview – 6 million of them Jews – and the people of Israel, he believes, will have it in them to not only survive, but also to respond effectively in the event of a major attack.
That response, he says, would come in the form of a “second strike,” Israel’s response to a major attack by Iran or the terror groups – and that strike would come in the form of Israel’s vaunted nuclear capability. Although Israel has never confirmed that it has such weapons, foreign press reports place the number of Israel’s nuclear arsenal in the dozens, if not hundreds. Milstein believes those reports, and believes that the leadership of the country would use those weapons at the moment of truth.
That, in and of itself, says Milstein, is a deterrence for Iran and its terror allies to launch a major strike on Israel, even in the event of an attack by Israel on Iran’s nuclear facilities. “We all hope and pray we never face that moment, but if we do, the Israeli response would fashion a ‘new Middle East.’
Israeli nuclear weapons would wipe out Iran, Hizbullah and Hamas, and possibly Syria and Lebanon, where Hizbullah would attack from.” Israel will eventually have to deal with these terror groups anyway, but cannot until a major event that would justify it takes place – such as an Iranian attack on Israel. “We have to relate to such a scenario in Biblical terms, as the modern-day equivalent of the final War of Gog and Magog,” says Milstein.
The Israeli people, he says, understand what is at stake, and are willing to sacrifice in order to ensure a better future. Of course, it would be best to avoid the entire scenario, but Milstein believes that preventing Iran from getting “the bomb” at this point would be very difficult. “Just like the U.S. has been unable to prevent North Korea from acquiring nuclear weapons, Israel has been unable to prevent Iran’s progress. Thus we must be prepared for the eventuality of an attack,” Milstein says.
The subject of “what if” rarely comes up in public (click here for a recent Arutz Sheva oped on the subject by Professor Louis Rene Beres) – or even private – discourse in Israel, possibly because many feel it would damage the morale of Israelis.
Milstein is not overly worried about that, however, pointing out the dire predictions before the Six Day War that between 50,000 and 100,000 Israelis would be killed if war broke out. “They even prepared mass graves at Bloomfield Stadium in Jaffa. But the predictions and precautions actually increased Israelis’ morale and motivation to strike back and destroy their enemies,” Milstein said.
A group of scientists is pushing to publish research about how they created a man-made flu virus that could potentially wipe out civilisation.
The deadly virus is a genetically tweaked version of the H5N1 bird flu strain, but is far more infectious and could pass easily between millions of people at a time.
The research has caused a storm of controversy and divided scientists, with some saying it should never have been carried out.
The current strain of H5N1 has only killed 500 people and is not contagious enough to cause a global pandemic.
But their are fears the modified virus is so dangerous it could be used for bio-warfare, if it falls into the wrong hands.
Virologist Ron Fouchier of the Erasmus Medical Centre in the Netherlands lead a team of scientists who discovered that a mere five mutations to the avian virus was sufficient to make it spread far more easily.
He conducted his tests on ferrets as the animals have become a model of choice for influenza and have similar respiratory tracts to humans.
Fouchier is so prepared for a media storm that he has hired an advisor to help him work on a communication strategy.
Fouchier admitted the strain is ‘one of the most dangerous viruses you can make’ but is still adamant he wants to publish a paper describing how it was done.
The study is one of two which has caused serious debate about scientific freedom and about regulating research which might have potential public health benefits but at the same time could also be useful for bio-terrorism.
The other paper, also on H5N1, was done by a joint team at the University of Wisconsin and the University of Tokyo.
It is understood to have had comparable results to the study done by Fouchier.
Both papers are now being reviewed by the U.S National Science Advisory Board for Biosecurity (NSABB).
NSABB does not have the power to prevent the publication but it could ask journals not to publish.
Paul Keim, chairman of NSABB, said: ‘I can’t think of another pathogenic organism that is as scary as this one. I don’t think anthrax is scary at all compared to this.’
Traditionally scientific research has always been open so that fellow scientists can review the work of others and repeat their methods to try and learn from them.
But numerous scientists have said they believe research on the avian flu should be suppressed.
However bio-defense and flu expert Michael Osterholm, who is director of the Center for Infectious Disease Research and Policy at the University of innesota, said the work carried out was important medically.
He added he could not discuss the papers because he was a member of NSABB but said if they were published certain information could be withheld and made available to those who really need to know.
‘We don’t want to give bad guys a road map on how to make bad bugs really bad,’ he said.
